Every year, thousands of people from all over the United States gather along the Florida-Alabama state line for the famous Flora Bama Mullet Toss. Now, if you think that means there’s a bunch of people throwing around mullet wigs, you’re in for a big surprise. A mullet is a common species of fish in the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s a dead mullet that people will be tossing to see who can throw it the farthest. Hosted by the famous Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar, Mullet Toss is a wildly popular event in the area, with loud music, cold drinks, and plenty of space for the whole family to spread out and watch contestants take their turn.

The Flora-Bama Lounge is both a local and national favorite, with signature cocktails, amazing food, and an ideal spot right on the line between Florida and Alabama. Celebrities stop to eat here, visitors make sure to take pictures of the historic spot, and even the locals come crowding in every night to catch some live music and fresh seafood. With so much popularity, it’s no wonder that their Mullet Toss event has become so successful.

At this point, you may be wondering why people are showing up in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores to throw a dead fish. Really, it’s all a big competition. A ten-foot circle is made in the sand on the Florida side, and this is where participants are going to throw their mullet from. Contestants grab a dead mullet out of a water tank and, from the circle, throw it as far as they can over the state line and into Alabama. The person who throws it the farthest in their division, wins. Prizes vary, but the big one is a gift certificate for Flora-Bama and some other cool gear that remains a surprise until the event begins. There are different divisions (based on sex and age) so that everyone in the family has the chance to participate. The potential glory of winning the Mullet Toss, however, is not the only reason this event is so popular. For every fish thrown, there is a contribution made to local charities and youth clubs. These donations have been a huge help to organizations like local Boys & Girls Clubs and the Community Drug & Alcohol Council, Inc. You will want to be sure to be around at noon on each day of the event to see local celebrities taking part in the competition!

For those who don’t want to participate in the Mullet Toss, there are still plenty of other ways to have fun during the event. The Mullet Toss takes part on a gorgeous stretch of the Emerald Coast, which means you are surrounded by pristine white-sand beaches, emerald-green waters, and abundant opportunities to do some of your own fishing, either on a charter or even just from the shore. During the Mullet Toss, the Flora-Bama’s bar is open for everyone to enjoy until 6:00 p.m., after which the bar is only open for those who are 21 and older. Walk around and sample some of the Gulf Coast’s famous fresh seafood at the outdoor vendors, get up and dance with all your friends, or just splash around in the water while you watch everything that goes on. The Mullet Toss is accompanied by one of the Gulf Coast’s biggest parties, so there is never a loss of things to do while it’s going on.

The 2021 Annual Interstate Mullet Toss will take place over April 23, 24, and 25, so start planning your trip down to Orange Beach or Gulf Shores now to ensure you get a beachside rental condo nearby. Make sure to grab some Mullet Toss t-shirts and other souvenirs to show off to all your friends who weren’t lucky enough to make it!
