Leinkauf Historical District Homes for Sale
Leinkauf Historical District is one of Mobile's oldest neighborhoods located in the heart of the city. The community was first established in 1904 with the opening of Leinkauf Elementary School which still operates to this today. Known by locals as "Old Mobile", this distinguished community is rich in history with homes built from the 1920s to the 20th century. The district spans over 1,000 acres and is bordered by Government, Virginia, Ann, and Houston Streets. The most well-known region of Leinkauf is known as "Millionaires Row". Located on Government, the street is lined with stately mansions from the early 1900's. During this time, owners of these homes were considered some of the wealthiest in Mobile. The Cannon, is another iconic landmark placed among Old Government, Government, and Houston Streets. A noteworthy symbol of Mobile's rich history, the Cannon was used during the Civil War to defend the grounds of Fort Morgan. The cannon is part of a fun-spirited tradition between two of the oldest high schools in Midtown Mobile. The tradition begins when the rivals compete against each other in football, the winning team will paint the cannon its school colors claiming victory until the end of the year. The Leinkauf District is a short trip to many popular restaurants and shopping venues. It is less than a 5 minute drive to Mobile's downtown business & entertainment district and takes approximately 15 - 20 minutes to reach the cities of the Eastern Shore.
