Fort Morgan is an unincorporated community just west of Gulf Shores, Alabama. This area, as we have discussed in another blog post, has a long and rich history as home to Fort Morgan, which served as a defensive point for Mobile Bay starting in the early 19th century. Today, the quiet beaches along the Fort Morgan peninsula serve as a respite from the heavily tourist-filled areas of downtown Gulf Shores. Wildlife preserves and refuges, museums, golf courses, homes, and condominiums can all be found here, but much of the peninsula is protected and, therefore, undeveloped.

Gulf Shores is hugely popular as a vacation destination. For decades, the tourism industry has really kept Gulf Shores alive and, thanks to new developments and plans for major

New rendering of Gulf Shores' planned mixed-use hotel in downtown

(Photo - City of Gulf Shores)

In early January 2017, the city of Gulf Shores made an exciting announcement about a new development that may be coming to the West Beach area of Gulf Shores. The development team is being led by Ron Durham and architect Mack McKinney and plans include a huge 240-room full service hotel with a spa and meeting facilities on site. The hotel will sit on two acres across the street from the public beach access and the Gulf Shores Hangout. This hotel will be an anchor for a large mixed-use development with retail shops, a restaurant, and a huge third-floor pool deck facing the beach below. The project will cost $80 million, but it can be expected that it will draw in a number of new tourists to the area and help boost the

Part of the Battleship Memorial Park, the USS Alabama sits near the submarine USS Drum and a museum with over twenty-five aircraft. There are memorials for the Korean and Vietnam Wars that visitors can view after exploring the USS Alabama.

The USS Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and went on to serve in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. In 1945, the USS Alabama was used to transport American servicemen in the Pacific back to the United

Harper Lee has long been recognized as one of the most influential and important authors of the 20th century, with her first and only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, being one of the most widely read books in the world. With her passing at the age of 89 earlier this year, the residents of her hometown in Monroeville, Alabama have debated about the best way to memorialize her life and her contributions to the American literary canon. Monroeville and its inhabitants have long been recognized as the inspiration behind the fictional town of Maycomb, where the events of To Kill a Mockingbird take place; however, the only local attraction pertaining to the novel is the old Monroeville County Courthouse, where the book's famous trial scene was filmed for the 1962

Built in 1852, Stedman's Landing played an integral part of Montrose, Alabama life until it was completely destroyed by a hurricane in 1916. The area remained a popular destination for both visitors and residents who wanted to enjoy views of Mobile Bay and relax on the shore. Stedman's Landing has served as the only public access to Mobile Bay, but heavy flooding back in 2014 damaged the walkway so badly that it had to be closed and erosion made Stedman's Landing unsafe. In 2015, Baldwin County received a federal grant to help stabilize the erosion and in 2016 the county received another, much larger, grant for necessary repairs to both Stedman's Landing and several other damaged areas around Fairhope.

Repairs on Stedman Landing have begun and include

A few miles west of the hustle and bustle of downtown Gulf Shores is the historical site of Fort Morgan. For over 100 years, Fort Morgan played an important role in the defense of Mobile Bay and the state of Alabama. Fort Bowyer was built in this area during the War of 1812 to protect the entrance to Mobile Bay from possible British attach. Fort Bowyer was actually built out of logs and sand, which were the best materials that could be found in the area at the time. The fort was attacked twice and one seized by British troops, but was turned back over to the American people as the result of a treaty signed at the end of the war. After that, Fort Bowyer was responsible for defending Mobile Bay into the 1820s.

In 1819, construction on a much bigger and

As Alabama's coastal population booms, schools in the area are becoming more and more crowded in the Gulf Shores area. Recently, a 200-acre parcel of land was purchased and there are plans to build a huge educational complex, including a brand new high school. The complex, known as the Coastal Alabama Center for Educational Excellence, will be the site of numerous educational facilities new to the area, but one of the most exciting additions to this complex, however, is a $12 million Auburn University satellite campus.
