Harper Lee has long been recognized as one of the most influential and important authors of the 20th century, with her first and only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, being one of the most widely read books in the world. With her passing at the age of 89 earlier this year, the residents of her hometown in Monroeville, Alabama have debated about the best way to memorialize her life and her contributions to the American literary canon. Monroeville and its inhabitants have long been recognized as the inspiration behind the fictional town of Maycomb, where the events of To Kill a Mockingbird take place; however, the only local attraction pertaining to the novel is the old Monroeville County Courthouse, where the book's famous trial scene was filmed for the 1962

Built in 1852, Stedman's Landing played an integral part of Montrose, Alabama life until it was completely destroyed by a hurricane in 1916. The area remained a popular destination for both visitors and residents who wanted to enjoy views of Mobile Bay and relax on the shore. Stedman's Landing has served as the only public access to Mobile Bay, but heavy flooding back in 2014 damaged the walkway so badly that it had to be closed and erosion made Stedman's Landing unsafe. In 2015, Baldwin County received a federal grant to help stabilize the erosion and in 2016 the county received another, much larger, grant for necessary repairs to both Stedman's Landing and several other damaged areas around Fairhope.

A few miles west of the hustle and bustle of downtown Gulf Shores is the historical site of Fort Morgan. For over 100 years, Fort Morgan played an important role in the defense of Mobile Bay and the state of Alabama. Fort Bowyer was built in this area during the War of 1812 to protect the entrance to Mobile Bay from possible British attach. Fort Bowyer was actually built out of logs and sand, which were the best materials that could be found in the area at the time. The fort was attacked twice and one seized by British troops, but was turned back over to the American people as the result of a treaty signed at the end of the war. After that, Fort Bowyer was responsible for defending Mobile Bay into the 1820s.

The popular Hangout Music Festival recently released the lineup for 2017 and tickets are already on sale! Major artists performing at the 2017 Hangout Music Festival will include Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean, Twenty One Pilots, Chance the Rapper, Weezer, and MGMT among others.
